Fine Art Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture
Simon Morris creates Limited Edition bronze sculptures of nautical figures and marine mammals in the ancient Lost Wax casting process.

ABOUT THE SCULPTOR

Simon Morris is the creator of the internationally known nine-foot tall bronze mermaid sculptures placed underwater as attractions for divers in Grand Cayman, BWI, & British Columbia, Canada. In addition to being presented as awards by the Ontario Underwater Council & the Under Water Council of British Columbia, his sculptures are featured in private and corporate collections in Belgium, Canada, England, France, Taiwan, Thailand, & the United States including Hawaii.

Simon was recently commissioned by the Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia to create a life-size memorial to the Canadian Merchant Navy to be placed on HMS Cape Breton before it is sunk as the Canadian Merchant Navy Memorial Artificial Reef near Nanaimo, BC in 2001.

He has been a certified diver & worked in the diving industry for over a quarter of a century, giving him the opportunity to dive and interact with marine mammals in some of the most remote oceanic regions. Simon is currently employed by SCUBAPRO, and is a recipient of the Canadian National Diving Achievement Award

Simon Morris produces limited edition bronze sculptures representing figurative and marine mammal subjects, and has developed a reputation for detail, realism, and anatomical accuracy, combined with a deep understanding of the ocean environment. Simon has donated sculpture to the Ocean Futures Foundation twice, and is a founding member of the Ocean Futures 'Oceans 2000' group.

Born in London England in 1958, Simon moved to Canada in 1966, and has lived with his wife and children on Saltspring Island in British Columbia since 1991. He began sculpting in direct welded steel at the age of 14, and has been working in bronze since 1987.

The second casting was installed on Sunset reef, at Sunset House resort in Grand Cayman, BWI, in October 2000

FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE DESCRIPTIONS

“The Emerald Princess” – This internationally famous bronze statue of a mermaid is nine feet tall, weighs over six hundred pounds, and stands waiting sixty feet beneath the waters of Mermaid Cove, B.C. to welcome adventurous divers from around the world. Placed in March of 1989, the Tenth anniversary of her sinking will be celebrated on March 13th & 14th, 1999. The Princess has become the figurehead for tourism in the area, and the improvements to the shore access amenities resulted in Mermaid Cove becoming the first Disabled-accessible dive site in B.C. She is one of the most photographed pieces of public art in British Columbia. The Emerald Princess is Number One in an edition of three, and the remaining two statues would be ideal for placement at diving or snorkeling locations around the world.

“Hang Time” - Hang Time is the price that diving pioneers pay for going deep and staying long in their quest for exploration, knowledge, and adventure. “Hang Time” - the sculpture - represents a fully equipped and properly configured Technical Diver suspended from a chain while decompressing in mid water. Simon Morris is an experienced diver, has worked in the industry for twenty years, the last seven years for SCUBAPRO.

Technical accuracy is assured by Simon’s collaboration on this project with David Rhea, Technical Diver, Cave Diving Instructor, and Regional Business Development Manager for SCUBAPRO in South Florida & the Caribbean. David has extensive credentials in the technical diving arena, including National Association for Cave Diving Instructor # 61 and Past Training Director, National Speleological Society – Cave Diving Section, Instructor # 233, Cave Diving Instructor for NAUI & YMCA, & IANTD EANx Cave Diving Instructor.

This work is currently in progress, and you may subscribe to the edition of twenty-four sculptures in this pre-release offering at an excellent price. Standing over two feet tall, this sculpture is suspended only by one hand on the chain, and one fin tip on the base, giving an excellent illusion of mid ocean suspension. Mounted on an oak base. The photo shows a study of the diver modeled in clay.

MARINE MAMMAL SCULPTURE DESCRIPTIONS

Humpback Whales
  • Renewal – Mother and calf Humpback whales SIZE 19"L X 15" H X 12" W. The goal of every creature is to ensure their species carries on. Like many whales, the Humpback has gone through dangerous times. Renewal celebrates the start of a new life, and the continuation of the line.
  • Ocean Flight – Single male humpback – 20”L
Ocean Flight embraces the soaring majesty of a large male Humpback whale gliding silently through the ocean waters. The interesting patina, or color is achieved using a combination of Ferric Nitrate and cobalt for the darker shades, and Silver Nitrate for the lighter underbelly. SIZE 20"L X 11" H X 16" W.
  • Learning to Fly – Young calf supported on mother’s wing
This sculpture represents the relationship between a young Humpback calf and its mother, as the calf learns to make its way through the ocean world by its mother's side. The base of the sculpture is the wing of the mother, with the calf tentatively gliding over it. The small size of this piece allows it to be cast in sold bronze, rather than hollow, which gives it a satisfying weight and heft. If you happen to be a Pink Floyd fan, the name came to me while I was working on the sculpture, listening to their song of the same name.

  • Deep Reef
The first casting of Deep Reef was donated to Ocean Futures Silent Auction at DEMA '96 in New Orleans to raise funds for that organization. The sculpture represents the synergy and interaction between dolphins when hunting on the deep reefs. Look to this space soon for a photo of the finished bronze sculpture, mounted on a museum quality Oak base. Edition Size 50 Price US $ 2250.00 Size 16" L X 10" W X 11" H

  • Crossroads –is collaborating with Tom Allen of Gainesville, Florida to raise funds through the sale of this sculpture for ongoing research into Manatee mortality. To set up a national campaign to market this program, we need to photograph the finished bronze sculpture, but there are presently no funds to cast this Wax and Plastelina work in progress pictured here.
